General description
Aggrecan is an extracellular protein that is also known as Aggrecan core protein, Cartilage-specific proteoglycan core protein (CSPCP), Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan core protein 1, and Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan 1. Aggrecan is encoded by the gene ACAN/AGC1/CSPG1/MSK16. Aggrecan is a proteoglycan that is a major component of the extracellular matrix of cartilaginous tissues. The major function of Aggrecan is to resist compression in cartilage, thus providing protection for joint movement and against injury. Aggrecan binds various other ECM proteins via its large globular domains. Aggrecan can be cleaved into Aggrecan core protein 2, a C-terminal fragment component that decreases in cartilage as people age. Aggrecan is expressed in cartilage and is a massive (>2500 kDa) proteoglycan protein that has multiple isoforms. The appearance of Aggrecan fragments in the blood is a marker for various joint diseases.
